How to Choose the Right Timber Floor Colour for Your Home

Light, natural, grey or dramatic dark — how to pick a floor tone that works with your light, space and style.

Colour is the decision most people agonise over — and rightly so. Your floor is the largest surface in the room, and its tone sets the mood for everything above it. The good news: there's no single right answer, only the right answer for your space. Here's how to narrow it down.

Start with your light

Natural light changes how a floor reads more than anything else. North-facing rooms flooded with sun can carry darker, cooler tones beautifully. South-facing or low-light spaces usually feel better with lighter, warmer floors that bounce light around. Always view samples in the actual room, at different times of day.

Match the tone to the mood

  • Light & airy (Oak Light White, Puro White): calm, Scandinavian, makes rooms feel bigger.
  • Natural oak (Universal, Markant, Sauvage): warm, timeless and easy to live with.
  • Soft grey (Shell Grey, Sand Grey, Tobacco Grey): contemporary and understated.
  • Warm brown (Reed Brown, African Oak): cosy, rich and grounding.
  • Dramatic dark (Carbon Black, Smoked Oak): bold, architectural, high-contrast.

Think about the whole room

Consider your walls, cabinetry and big furniture pieces. Light floors with light walls feel expansive and serene; dark floors create contrast and drama but show dust and footprints more readily. Busy grain and rustic grades hide everyday wear better than very clean, uniform floors.

Frequently asked questions

What's the most popular timber floor colour?
Natural and light oak tones remain the most versatile and enduring choices, because they suit almost any interior and don't date. Greys and dramatic darks are popular for contemporary, high-contrast schemes.
Do dark floors make a room look smaller?
They can make a room feel cosier and more enclosed, and they show dust and marks more readily. In small or low-light rooms, lighter floors usually feel more spacious.
Should my floor match my doors and trim?
Not necessarily — contrast can look intentional and elegant. Aim for tones that complement rather than clash; our team can help you coordinate.
