How to Care for Engineered Timber Floors: A Maintenance Guide

Pre-finished and genuinely low-maintenance — here's the simple routine that keeps it beautiful for decades.

A quality engineered floor is pre-finished and genuinely easy to live with. There's no sanding, sealing or fuss — just a little routine care that keeps it looking its best for decades. Here's the simple regime.

Everyday care

  • Sweep, dust-mop or vacuum regularly to lift grit before it scratches.
  • Wipe spills promptly with a barely-damp — never wet — cloth.
  • Use felt pads under furniture legs and protective mats at entrances.
  • Keep indoor humidity in a comfortable range (around 50–60%) for timber stability.

Cleaning the right way

Clean with the matched HARO clean & care system for your surface — oiled or lacquered. Avoid steam mops, all-purpose cleaners and excess water, all of which can damage timber over time. Less water is always better with a wood floor.

Oiled vs lacquered surfaces

Lacquered surfaces are hard-wearing and very low-maintenance. Oiled surfaces have a beautiful natural feel and can be refreshed in place over time, which makes them easy to keep looking new for years. Your installer or our team can tell you which you have.

Refreshing over time

One of the joys of a real timber floor is that it can be cared for and refreshed rather than replaced. For deeper maintenance, talk to our team about the right HARO product for your floor. Backed by a 30-year residential warranty, a well-cared-for HARO floor is a floor for life.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a steam mop on engineered timber?
No — steam and excess water can damage timber over time. Use a barely-damp mop with the matched HARO care product instead.
How often should I clean a timber floor?
Sweep or vacuum regularly to remove grit, and damp-clean as needed. Wipe spills as soon as they happen.
Can engineered timber be refinished?
A quality engineered floor with a thick oak wear layer can be refreshed. Oiled surfaces in particular can be revived in place over time.
